What makes city people happy? Better roads and better infrastructure? Watering holes, vibrant nightlife, shining malls, movie theatres, performing art spaces, 24/7 convenience? Maybe. A recent study establishes the obvious however – what makes city people even happier is seeing un-city like things – tree-lined avenues, flowers of every hue and colour, morning bird calls, natural open spaces and lots of green.

Over 50% of the world’s population lives in cities. Which makes it very important for us to figure out who we’d like to share our city space with – teeming cheerful messy life in the form of insects, small mammals, trees, birds and natural ecosystems, or grey upon grey of built-up area? The wildlife around us is not a happy bonus; from basic sustenance to health and psychological well-being, we depend on our natural ecosystems in many unseen ways.

The 6th edition of the Green Bazaar, the World Environment Day special, is a call to re-connect with Nature right under our noses.
