Under the Stars is a sleep-out overnight to raise awareness and funds for NGOs working towards the prevention of homelessness.

Date: Friday 2nd October from 7pm, to Saturday 3rd October 6am

Location: Indiranagar Club, Bangalore

Event:

Under the Stars is a sleep-out overnight to raise awareness and funds for NGOs working towards the prevention of homelessness. We’ll have band and NGO performances, on-the- night activities like stargazing and an AIESEC activism wall as well as other things happening throughout the night! There will be food stalls, and the chance to chat to representatives from each of our NGO partners. Any funds raised from tickets will be split equally amongst our partner NGOs, as well as any sponsorship we receive.

Organisers

Under the Stars aims to raise awareness and funds for NGOs working towards the prevention of homelessness. It is organized both by individual volunteers, and by representatives from the organizing partners. This year, the organizing partners are RECAL NIT Trichy Alumni Association, India Cares and the Baale Mane Trust. We have also teamed up with AIESEC student association, who are our official Youth Partner.

The names of our core organizing team this year are: Emily Parkes and Tiggy Allen, from the Baale Mane Trust; Richya Bansal, Namitha Ravi and Saurabh Gupta from RECAL NIT Trichy Alumni Association and Ankita, Prasanth, Maitreyee, Niveditha, Pavan and Devi who are all individual volunteers.

Concept

Under the Stars is a collaborative platform for NGOs to use in their fundraising and awareness-raising about homelessness, and all participating NGOs will receive an equal share of the funds raised this year. It is the first event of Daan Utsav (The Joy of Giving Week) and many people participate in Under the Stars as their act of giving.

This year, we are going to provide entertainment in the form of bands and NGO performances, will have some speakers from NGOs talking about their work and their perspectives on homelessness, and some other engaging activities happening throughout the night!

We are aiming to hold it in the centre of Bangalore this year, and therefore are still in the negotiation process for a venue – the best way to stay up to date is to join our Facebook event page.

NGOs

This year, we are partnering with 5 NGO’s: The Baale Mane Trust, Action Aid, Rainbow Homes, Home of Hope (New Ark Mission of India) and the Adarane Trust. All work to alleviate homelessness in and around Bangalore.

Other Activities

We are also organising a Sleep Mob (flash mob, but sleeping instead of dancing) to be held in the centre of Bangalore on Saturday 19th September! To be involved, people can email underthestars.info@gmail.com as we are currently asking for permissions from the police, so are unsure of the exact location. This is to raise awareness about homelessness in Bangalore, and also to publicise the main Under the Stars event.
