Date a guy who buys and cooks organic

Your knight in shining armour is waiting at the corner street organic store, or at the next farmer’s market. Dare to look and lock eyes with him?

If your guy flinches (and dare voices concern) at your freshly bought bottle of smoothening conditioner or your attachment to colas and canned foods, pat yourself. There is every possibility that you are already dating someone environmentally conscious, organic loving who dreams of a fair world that is populated by less greedy humans consuming sustainable products. But what of others? Why oh why would you date someone who wants to go organic? Well, there are a million reasons. How about a healthy life, to start with? Your chemical cocktail of smoothening conditioners and lead-laden lip colours can wait.

He is healthy and wants you to be too

He understands the risks associated with pumping chemicals into your body by way of food. The amount of pesticide pressure your vegetables withstand to look pretty (not unlike you, by the way) in the supermarket aisles is inversely proportional to your health, he knows. Instead of hunting for vegetables and groceries in the freezer-equipped supermarkets, he hunts for them fresh in organic stores. Sometimes little known shops, sometimes so obscure that they don’t even have a website, sometimes from the next street vendor to buy fresh milk. All because he cares to be healthy and he wants you and the future with you to be safe and disease-free.

He cares for the environment

Studies have repeatedly found traces of pesticides used by farmers for a healthy crop ending up in the environment – in the air you breathe, in the rain from where you get your water and in other water sources. Let’s not even start with the untreated chemicals you and I use in our homes (shampoos, body washes, cleaning agents, tooth paste foam, and so on) that end in up in water bodies. Your organic guy will only use natural cleaning products and that in turn will benefit your good health. But you need to stop complaining about it not smelling chemical-nice or froth up like it would generally.

He knows it is only natural

Organic is the way nature intended to be. Sure the vegetables/grains are not as good looking as your inorganic but it’s certainly more nutritious. It’s proven that the same serving of organic food provides you with more amount of vitamins and minerals (iron, magnesium, phosphorus) than conventionally grown vegetables and grains. He also knows organic tastes much better. Not to mention, he steers clear of GM food because he knows the kinds of diseases and health risks GM food puts your body through. Just because there has not been enough research about it.

He knows the importance of agricultural diversity

Thanks to the homogenization of our food (there are only about two types of rice variety available in your nearby supermarket for daily use, have you noticed?) by selective mass-production, hundreds of heirloom varieties of our seeds are at the brink of extinction. By promoting organic products, he is also promoting the livelihood of a small group of farmers who are striving to keep these seeds disappearing from the face of earth and helping rural economies to thrive. He also appreciates the efforts of a good bunch of seed collectors who work to keep the agricultural diversity of our country. Would you hold it against him for being picky about grocery shopping? I didn’t think so.

And finally, he has common sense

A person with common sense makes conscious decisions – all the above mentioned and more. Making the switch to organic isn’t that hard or expensive as you think. Nor is it completely snobbish. It just requires a little hard work and just walking the extra mile (or cycling to work instead of investing in a car). And if you have already found a guy who does all this, grab him by the hand and don’t let him go. Because such guys are hard, very hard to come by. And if you haven’t yet, here are a million wishes. Your knight in shining armour is just waiting at the corner street organic store or at the next farmer’s market. Dare to look and lock eyes with him?

Above all, what makes a person who has environmental consciousness, makes sustainable choices of living and sensible purchase decisions? An all round nice person. These qualities also make him totally date-worthy. What’s more, your progeny will thank you for bringing them into a better world.
