Nature On My Plate 2013: Student essay contest prize winners

Prize winners of the essay contest conducted by 24-Mantra Organic on healthy eating in Bangalore schools.

In order to engage children around the connection between their plates, healthy eating and the environment, 24-Mantra Organic in collaboration with The Alternative, presented Nature On My Plate: Good food for healthy kids, happy farmers and a better planet at BioFach India 2013, S. Asia’s largest organic marketplace.

As a part of the month long campaign, over 29 schools had children participating in an essay contest, expressing themselves on the topic of sustainable food. Students from the 6th to 8th Standards recounted their favourite healthy food experiences while children from 9th to 12th Std delved deeper into the effects of Genetically Modified Food.

The essays were truly a delight to read, every one of the submissions, marking the amount of effort the children had put in to understand the subject and find creative ways to express themselves on the topic. From beautifully drawn phytonutrients in salads to stories of pizza sandwich dreams and endearing tales of first cookouts, the younger children had some wonderful personal anecdotes to share while connecting to the larger picture of why eating healthy is important to them.

The senior students’ essays underscored the amount of research that had been carried out in order to understand the various dimensions of the GM issue worldwide and in India. Some students took a stand on the issue and presented cogent arguments towards the same, while others chose to present an objective picture of both the potential benefits and drawbacks of genetically modifying food.
