Viewpoint: This landfill is alive with the sound of music

Landfill Harmonic, a documentary releasing soon, is about a group of children from Cateura who play instruments made entirely out of waste.

Cateura is a small city in Paraguay that is situated on top of a massive garbage dump. It is one of the poorest slums of Latin America, and the landfill is the main source of income for Cateura’s residents. The children in Cateura have always been involved in gang wars and drugs.

Somewhere in this vast wasteland, a garbage picker named Nicolás Gómez (known as “Cola”) found a piece of trash that resembled a violin and brought it to musician Favio Chávez. Using other objects collected from the dump, the pair constructed a functional violin in a place where a real violin is worth more a house. This small endeavour lead to the “The Recycled Orchestra”, a group of children who play instruments made out of recycled waste.

Landfill Harmonic, a feature length documentary releasing soon, is about a group of children from Cateura who play instruments made entirely out of waste. Their venture has transformed the community, with parents kicking their addictions to watch their children perform, and finishing school so that they too can move upward in life with their children. Surrounded by drugs, violence, alcoholism and destitution, these families have made herculean efforts to reaffirm their lives and dignity, and hope for a better tomorrow.
