“A society is defined not only by what it creates, but by what it refuses to destroy.”

The focus was on making things last.

Over 3 weeks in July, we ran ‘WATTAY WASTE‘, an online campaign on social media, primarily on Facebook, where audiences uploaded photos of their recycled and upcycled creations & innovations on our page, which we further promoted across social networks.

The purpose was to promote the idea of leading an eco-friendly existence through very simple activities. We looked to celebrate the three Rs – reduce, reuse and recycle as simple and doable lifestyle choices as much as them being creative, artistic and totally worthwhile pursuits.

The Alternative’s editors and campaign sponsors Silver Nut Tree chose their top 5 entries each, and here they are:

Cool recycled bottles

wattay waste: An out of the box idea to recycle flipcart boxes

wattay waste: An out of the box idea to recycle flipcart boxes

Very high on innovation, out-of-the-box thinking and although a bit of an effort to learn how to do or even to make it, something more people would take to considering they come out of flipkart boxes!

wattay waste: Not sure what to do with old t shirts? here is a way of recycling them.

Thought this scored very high on gesture and coolness of re-using old t-shirts. Will be quite a win for our younger readers 🙂

wattay waste: A simple recycling idea for children using bindis and old newspapers

Thought this children’s giraffe project was very fascinating esp. the usage of the old bindis and regional newspapers.

wattay waste: recycled old cds.

Love the simplicity of it and the perfect re-use for cds.

wattay waste: A perfect way of recycling the old kitchen tools.

wattay waste: A perfect way of recycling the old kitchen tools.

Really innovative and creative. There are such things lying in our kitchens for years and we still couldn’t figure what to do with them! This is functional, creative, aesthetically appealing and highly doable.

wattay waste: Here is a good way to use those unused old ties lying in your wardrobe and recycle them.

Until a better way to recycle old ties is found 🙂

Wattay Waste: A piece of art.

Wattay Waste: A piece of art.

This is sheer art and should be showcased in exhibitions! delightfully attractive…might not have too much of functionality but everything in this world need not be useful :)!

wattay waste: innovative idea to recycle old cutlery.

wattay waste: innovative idea to recycle old cutlery.

Very funky and out of the box…..will not occur to many and not very easy to do….but surely a great way to upcycle old cutlery.

wattay waste: An easy way of recycling old bottles.

What we liked: How she retained the old ‘value’ of the bottle and worked the art around it to make it look very kitsch.

And the entries poured in, and they still are pouring in! Though the contest is over, WHATTAY WASTE on Facebook still remains open to entries. So, if you have a cool recycling/upcycling idea, do right ahead and upload a picture on Facebook!

Stay with us to celebrate the not so new!
