As Muhammad Yunus of Grameen Bank rightly sums it up – “Social entrepreneurs are not content just to give a fish or teach how to fish. They will not rest until they have revolutionized the fishing industry.”

Kalpavriksha 2015 from IIM Indore looks to reel in such game-changing revolutionaries! To harness the very idea of social innovation, Kalpavriksha provides a platform for social entrepreneurs and social enterprises to come forward to showcase socially inclined business plans, share ideas and achievements, get mentored by field experts and have their initiatives supported with up to Rs 5 Lacs in funding by Sir Dorabji Tata Trust. Kalpavriksha 2015, together with its partners in NEN, GAP, Villgro, Unltd India and IEN seek to be the biggest platform in India for social innovation. The event will provide an opportunity to learn from mentors such as Padma Shri Mrs Janak Palta Mcgilligan, Mr Anand Kumar of Super 30 fame, Mr Madan Padaki of Head Held High and others.

Ayush Bansal of the Medhavi Foundation and winner of Kalpavriksha 2012 shares his advice to budding social entrepreneurs – “The goal of any such organization is to create a positive social impact. But somewhere along the line, as you move towards becoming self-sustained, you tend to move towards profit. How to control yourself and stay true to your vision? I think this is the hardest task for any social organisation. If you have to overcome this, you have to stick to your vision, build a strong pilot and execute it.”

Reflecting on its previous editions, Kalpavriksha is proud to see its past winners pitching their unique ideas and being recognized in various platforms:

 Team Farms and Farmers, finalists at Kalpavriksha 2012, have been granted Ashoka Fellowship for an idea which aims at maximizing profit per unit area of land for small and marginal farmers

 Winners of Kalpavriksha 2012 were granted a seed fund of INR 1 Million by Morarka Organic for their business plan which would empower rural farmers to have greater ownership within the food value chain

 Team Pragati Prayas with their business plan “Aahar: Meals for Poor at INR 5”, winner of Kalpavriksha 2008 went on to win GSEC’09

 Winners of Kalpavriksha 2007 are being backed by Andhra Pradesh government for implementation in their state

As we look forward to its 10th edition, Kalpavriksha, IIM Indore hopes to live up to its theme of “Taking the road less travelled to create a difference!” The deadline for Round 1 submissions for Kalpavriksha’15 from IIM Indore is 11th October, 2015.
