Chennai Coastal Cleanup volunteers cleared up 29 tons of waste in a single day!

The sixth edition of Chennai Coastal Cleanup saw 5,500 people cleaning up 20km of coastline and collect 29 tons of waste, 16 tons of which will be recycled.


1) The sixth edition of Chennai Coastal Cleanup saw 29 tons of waste being collected, 16 tons of which will be recycled by Earth Recycler.

2) 5,500 people got together on June 7th to clean up 20km of Chennai Coastline. They also took a pledge to reduce littering and to segregate waste at their homes.

3) For 3 months, volunteers engaged in public awareness sessions through flash-mobs, wall paintings, street plays, quiz, and competitions.

What you can do to keep pace with waste

1) Volunteering for Lake Restoration activities –  Environment for India (EFI) has been actively involved in Lake Restoration Projects. Interested people can sign up for weekend clean up drives on their FB page.

2) Waste management for large scale events – The first Bengaluru Marathon (2014) set an example to all the marathons across India by managing its waste, followed by TWCM (2014) and Cool Runners Half Marathon in 2015.

3) Options for recycling waste in Chennai for individual homes – Chennai city generates 6,404 tonnes of garbage every day. The modern Kabadiwalas like Paperman, Kuppathotti are now available to collect trash at your doorstep at the click of a mouse.
