The Hyderabad High Court has ordered a thorough investigation into the use of carcinogenic calcium carbide to ripen fruits artificially and reprimanded authorities for not handling the matter seriously. The court deemed the practice as “worse than terrorism”. On August 14, the High Court has instructed the governments across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh to conduct immediate raids in fruit shop and identify involved traders. The reports were then sent to labs and the fruits were reported unsafe for human consumption.

The thing about calcium carbide is that its components acetylene and calcium cyanamide are used as fuels and fertilizers, respective, and are extremely harmful to the human body. It acts as a hormone stimulator, thereby accelerating the process of ripening. Calcium carbide is a certified carcinogen and contains traces of arsenic which can cause cancer, kidney disorders and other neurological disorders. Moreover, it came into notice that many traders inject sweeteners in mangoes, papaya and apples to make them taste unnaturally sweet.

While we ensure that we don’t eat junk food, we also have to look at the fruits and vegetables we consume. One way out is to to go organic with all our fruits and veggies. Organic produce contains more antioxidants, as opposed to their conventionally grown counterparts, and contain no harmful chemicals.
