Read With Me: Three good books on parenting

Its quite easy to recommend three books for parents. How children fail, Raising your spirited child, and Wonder child.

These three books are easily recommendable for parents.

Just read John Holt’s “How children fail” – three times. Most parents find John Holt’s views too scandalous – almost blasphemous. It does jolt us from our so uni dimensional thinking about learning / children. You will, also, inevitably end up reading John Holt’s “How children learn”.

How Children Fail

If you think your child is different and you’re struggling to figure out strategies to work with your child, try reading Kurcinka’s “Raising your Spirited child”. She has separate chapters of children who are spirited in different ways and how to work with them.

If you just want to enjoy a very visual and lyrical reflections of the journey called “Wonder Child”, do buy and read this collectors treasure by Peter Lorie. It’s a treat for anybody who thinks parenting is not a responsibility or a worrisome chore but as one of the most amazing gifts given to us!

This is part of the August Read With Me special series on children reading for a better tomorrow.

As parents, educators, readers and writers, we know how important it is to get children – from infants to young adults – to be readers, and readers for life. Read With Me all this month looks to encourage children to read more. We are also talking about reading that goes much beyond a good tale – as vibrant, fun and effective ways to get children to connect to themselves, their roots, accept difference, understand people and places and be more sensitive. All of August, The Alternative says Read With Me – read more and read for change.
